Why HiBid works well for buyers and sellers

Short answer: HiBid is the online bidding platform we run every Matt Ramsey Auctions sale on, and it works because it puts a local auction in Hermosa, South Dakota in front of bidders across the country while keeping the process simple on both ends. Buyers get one account, clear photos and descriptions, and bidding they can do from the kitchen table. Sellers get more eyes on their items, which usually means better numbers than a weekend yard sale or a classified ad ever will.

What exactly does HiBid do during an auction?

HiBid is the catalog and the bidding floor. Every lot we photograph and write up gets loaded there with its own page, so a buyer can zoom in on a serial number, read the condition notes, and see the bid history before deciding what something is worth to them.

It also handles the timing. Our auctions close in a staggered, soft-close style, so lots end a few at a time and any bid in the last moments extends that lot briefly. Nobody loses a generator because their internet hiccuped in the final three seconds. You can set a max bid and walk away, and the system bids for you in increments up to your limit — it won't jump straight to your ceiling.

If you're brand new to it, browsing our current and upcoming auctions on HiBid is the fastest way to get a feel for how it reads. You don't have to bid to look.

How does HiBid reach bidders outside the Black Hills?

This is the part sellers notice most. HiBid is a nationwide network, and people who bid regularly on tools, firearms, sporting goods, farm and shop equipment, or collectibles have watchlists and email alerts set up on it already. When we list a shop full of welders and hand tools south of Rapid City, it lands in front of buyers in Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, and a lot further out.

That matters because value depends on who's looking. A specialty item — an older tractor implement, a reloading setup, a niche piece of construction equipment — may have two interested buyers in Custer County and forty nationwide. The platform is what closes that gap, and smaller items can ship, which we cover in our post on what pickup and shipping really look like.

Why do you use HiBid instead of running your own site?

Because we'd rather spend our hours on the parts that actually need us. Nobody bids on a blurry photo and a one-line description, so our time goes into sorting, cleaning, photographing, and writing up lots honestly — including the scratches and the "untested, sold as-is" notes.

HiBid handles registration, bid increments, invoicing, and the audit trail. We handle the people. That's the personal service side: answering the phone when you have a question about a lot, extended pickup windows so you're not scrambling on a workday, and help loading the heavy stuff when you get here. Plenty of our repeat buyers come back for exactly that combination — a national bidder pool with a local outfit on the other end of the line.
