Auction pickup and shipping: what winners need to know

You won an item — congratulations. Here's the short version: after the auction closes you'll get an emailed invoice, payment is due before pickup, and you come get your items at our location near Hermosa during the pickup window listed on that specific auction. We keep pickup times longer than most so out-of-town buyers aren't scrambling, we'll help you load the heavy stuff, and some smaller items can be shipped if you ask before the window closes.

When and where do I pick up what I won?

Every auction lists its own pickup dates and location right in the auction terms on our HiBid auction site, so read those before you bid. Most of our sales are picked up at our place 16 miles south of Rapid City, just outside Hermosa, but estate and farm auctions are often picked up on site at the property where the items sold.

We try to give people a real window instead of one rushed afternoon. If you're driving in from Custer, Wall, Newcastle, or somewhere farther out and the listed days don't work, call or email us. Nine times out of ten we can figure something out. What we ask in return is that you tell us ahead of time instead of showing up two weeks later hoping someone's around — we're a small operation, and the next auction's items are usually already coming through the door.

Can you help me load a lathe, a generator, or a gun safe?

Yes. We've got equipment and people on site during pickup, and we'd rather load it for you than watch somebody try to wrestle a 1,200-pound tool box into a half-ton with a couple of two-by-fours.

A few things make it go smoothly:

– Bring the right trailer and straps. We can lift it, but we can't tie it down for you, and we won't send you down Highway 79 with something sliding around.
– Bring a helper if you bought a full shop's worth. One truck, one person, forty lots — that's a long day.
– Know your weights. Item descriptions and photos usually give you a good idea, and if you're not sure before you bid, ask. We'd rather answer the question early than have an awkward conversation later. Our post on getting shop tools and equipment ready for auction gives you a sense of how those lots come together on the seller's side, too.

Small items you can carry out yourself are staged and ready to go. Just bring your invoice number.

What if I live too far away to come get it?

This comes up a lot, especially on tools, sporting goods, collectibles, and firearms. Short answer: some things we can ship, some things we can't.

Small, sturdy, boxable items are usually fine. We'll pack them and bill you for actual shipping plus a modest handling charge. Firearms ship to a licensed FFL dealer on your end, never to your door, and we'll need that dealer's paperwork before anything moves. Fragile glassware, heavy equipment, furniture, anything over a few hundred pounds — those you'll need to pick up yourself or arrange a third-party hauler or freight company. We're happy to meet a driver you hire and load them out.

The key is asking early. Send us a message the day the auction closes, not the day pickup ends. Details on payment, sales tax, and terms live on our frequently asked questions page, and if something isn't answered there, call.

Items left past the pickup window without arrangements are considered abandoned — that's in the terms on every sale, and we'd much rather not have to use it. A two-minute phone call solves almost everything.

If you've got a shop, an estate, or a shed full of things headed the other direction, see how selling with us works.
