To sell an estate at auction in the Black Hills, start with a phone call and a walkthrough so we can see what you have, then let us sort, photograph, and list the items on HiBid while you stay home. A typical estate auction runs about two to four weeks from listing to closing, with pickup a few days after, and sellers usually get paid within a couple weeks of the final pickup. You don't need to price anything, clean anything up, or haul it anywhere first.
What happens when I first call you about an estate?
Usually it starts with a family calling after a parent has passed, or after a move or a retirement, and the house and shop are still full. We'll set a time to come look. That visit is free, and there's no obligation on either end.
At the walkthrough we're looking at three things: what's there, what it's likely to bring, and how we'd break it into lots. A hundred-year-old crock and a shop full of Snap-on wrenches sell to different buyers, so grouping matters. We'll talk honestly about anything that isn't worth listing — sometimes the right answer is donate it or put it in the dumpster, and we'll tell you that instead of running it up as filler.
If it's a good fit, we go over terms, commission, and dates, then get it on the calendar. You can start the conversation any time through our sell with us page or just call.
Do I have to sort and clean everything myself?
No. This is the part that surprises people most. We do the sorting, staging, photographing, and writing of descriptions. If you want to pull out family keepsakes first, do that — everything else can stay where it sits.
For most estates we run the auction on site, which means nothing gets moved twice. Tools stay in the shop, furniture stays in the house, and buyers come to the property during pickup. If the property needs to be emptied for a sale or closing, we'll work around that timeline.
Shop and equipment estates take a little more prep because buyers want to know what runs and what doesn't. We walk through that in detail in our post on getting shop tools and equipment ready for auction, but the short version is: we'll test what we can, note what we can't, and describe it straight.
How long does the whole thing take, and when do I get paid?
Rough timeline for a full estate near Hermosa, Rapid City, or Custer:
Listing and bidding
Cataloging a full estate takes a few days to a week depending on size. Bidding usually runs seven to ten days on our HiBid auction page, where bidders from all over the country can watch and bid.
Pickup
Pickup is scheduled after closing, and we give more time than most companies do — plus help loading the heavy stuff. Buyers often ask about this, and we lay it out in our post on what pickup and shipping really look like.
Settlement
Once pickup wraps, we reconcile everything and send the seller a check with an itemized statement showing what each lot brought.
Why not just hold a yard sale?
You can, and for a garage's worth of stuff, maybe you should. But an estate means dozens of trips to the bank, strangers in the driveway for three weekends, and a lot of haggling over a $2 sticker.
An auction puts everything in front of thousands of registered bidders at once, lets the market set the price, and finishes on a known date. For families splitting an estate between siblings, that last part matters — everybody sees the same numbers.
More questions get answered on our frequently asked questions page, and we're always glad to talk one through on the phone.
