Selling an estate at auction: where to start

If you’re settling an estate in southwestern South Dakota, start by leaving everything where it is and giving us a call before you sort or haul anything off. From there, we walk through the property with you, figure out what’s worth selling, and handle the photos, descriptions, and listing so the items reach buyers across the region and beyond. We’re Matt Ramsey Auctions, and running estate auctions is a big part of what we do.

Here’s how it usually goes, and what you can expect along the way.

What should I keep and what should I sell?

Before anything goes to auction, take care of the things that matter to your family. Photos, letters, keepsakes, and anything with sentimental weight should come out first. Nobody can put a price on those, so set them aside without second-guessing.

After that, you might be surprised what still has value. Household goods, furniture, kitchen items, tools, yard equipment, vehicles, and collectibles all find buyers when they’re listed the right way. We handle single items all the way up to complete estates, so you don’t have to decide ahead of time what’s “worth it.” If you’re unsure, leave it in the pile and we’ll take a look together. A quick conversation on our contact page is a good place to begin.

What sells well at an estate auction around here?

In this part of South Dakota, shop and tool auctions do steady business. Hand tools, power tools, welders, air compressors, and shop equipment draw a lot of attention from folks who work with their hands. Farm and ranch equipment, generators, trailers, and construction gear also tend to move well when the descriptions are clear and the photos show the real condition.

Everyday household items matter too. When an estate is listed as a whole, buyers browse the whole thing, and one person’s spare bedroom furniture is exactly what someone else has been hunting for. Because we run our auctions online through HiBid, your items aren’t limited to who can drive out on a Saturday. Online bidding opens things up to buyers across the Black Hills and well past it. You can see how our current listings look on our current auctions page.

How does the auction actually work, from my driveway to the listing?

Once we’ve decided together what’s selling, here’s the general order of things.

We come to you

We come out, look over the property, and talk through the plan. There’s no need to move heavy items or clean everything up first. Sorting and staging is part of what we do.

We photograph and describe every lot

Good photos and honest, detailed descriptions are what earn buyer trust, so we take our time here. Each lot gets its own listing so bidders know exactly what they’re looking at.

We list on HiBid and manage the sale

Your auction goes up on the HiBid platform, where bidders place their offers online over a set window. We keep an eye on questions and make sure everything runs smoothly through closing.

We handle pickup

After the auction ends, buyers come to collect their items. We offer extended pickup times and help with loading, which keeps the whole process easier on everyone, including you.

Every estate is different, so the details shift from one job to the next. If you’re facing a move, a retirement, or the hard work of settling a family member’s estate, you can learn more about how Matt and Dawn Ramsey work and reach out whenever you’re ready. Once an item’s gavel drops, it’s Sold, and we’re glad to walk you through what comes next.
